US CPI, PPI, Beige Book - expect higher-for-longer inflation

بقلم Rhona O'Connell · 19 أكتوبر 2026

  • The widening differential between PPI and CPI creates financial strain, forcing producers to choose between passing rising costs to consumers or accepting reduced margins (p. 1, p. 2).
  • The October Beige Book reveals softer overall economic activity, where modest manufacturing gains are offset by cautious consumer behavior (p. 3, p. 4).
    • Manufacturing reported robust improvements in Dallas and modest-to-moderate growth in six Districts, while the remaining five saw little or no growth (p. 4).
    • Consumer spending is split between high-income households underpinning spending and lower-end consumers tightening belts, while auto sales were flat to lower (p. 4).
    • Employment remained little changed across districts, with difficulty finding skilled workers and AI productivity gains limiting staffing plans (p. 4).
    • Four Districts reported an accelerated pace of price increases driven by oil, diesel, commodities, tariffs, and insurance, with firms passing cost increases through selectively (p. 4).
  • Persistent CPI and PPI inflation pressures have heightened market expectations for FOMC rate hikes (p. 3, p. 5).
    • Following the inflation numbers, swaps market probabilities indicated a 29% chance of an October rate hike and an 86% chance for December (p. 3).
    • Following September's 12–0 vote to set a 3.75–4.00% target range, Federal Reserve speakers during the week of October 12–15, 2026, generally backed one additional rate hike in 2026 (p. 5).
    • Hotter September CPI (3.7% y/y; core +0.3% m/m) raised CME October-hike odds to 35–47%, though a hold is favored for the October 27–28 meeting, which precedes the November 3 midterms (p. 5).
    • A December 8–9 hike is nearly fully priced in at ~71% (CME) / 75% (Kalshi), while expectations diverge for 2027 policy (p. 5).
