Weekly Precious Metals Recap: #Gold & #Silver — Is This Rally for Real?
What a week for precious metals. After months of volatility, geopolitical headlines, shifting expectations for U.S. interest rates, and repeated attempts to establish a bottom, gold and silver are finally showing signs that this rally may have some real staying power. Gold has pushed through some important technical levels, while silver has once again demonstrated its ability to outperform when momentum returns to the precious metals complex. The question now is whether this is another short-term, positioning-driven rally or the beginning of a more sustainable move higher. Several signals are worth watching. Implied Gold EFPs remain elevated relative to London OTC forward rates and SOFR. The recent strength in EFPs initially appeared to be influenced by significant CTA short covering and concentrated buying on CME. GLD Call buying, large strikes getting taken out.
Physical liquidity remains an important part of the equation. London gold and silver inventories have been replenished, and OTC forward rates continue to indicate reasonable liquidity. For this rally to become fundamentally stronger, I would like to see increased physical demand begin absorbing that available metal, accompanied by sustained ETF inflows. Options and volatility are also telling us something. If prices can continue higher without a corresponding explosion in implied volatility, that would be constructive. A more orderly rally, rather than one driven primarily by leveraged positioning and short covering, should provide a healthier foundation for a sustained move. From a technical standpoint, the market has made meaningful progress. The important question is whether gold can hold its recent gains and establish itself above the major moving averages. Holding those levels would strengthen the argument that the market has moved beyond simply forming a base. Macro conditions remain complicated. The U.S. dollar, interest rates, expectations for FOMC policy, and developments in the Middle East can quickly change sentiment. Precious metals have nevertheless shown impressive resilience despite these crosscurrents. So, is this rally for real? I am becoming increasingly optimistic. But rather than declaring victory after a strong move, I want the underlying data to confirm what the price action is telling us. Watch the EFPs, physical flows, ETF demand, implied volatility, the U.S. dollar, and the major technical levels. If those pieces begin moving together, we may finally have something more than another short-lived rally. As always, let the market reveal its direction rather than trying to anticipate every move.
