Precious Metals Await Fed as Weaker Dollar Lends Support
Gold prices consolidated above the $4,300 mark, while silver prices continued a multi-day winning streak, rising toward $70.50 per ounce. Market participants are largely awaiting the US Federal Reserve's upcoming interest rate decision for fresh directional cues. A broadly weaker US Dollar, partly attributed to geopolitical optimism, provided underlying support for the precious metals complex.
Geopolitical Optimism Weighs on Oil and the US Dollar
Optimism surrounding a potential US-Iran peace deal contributed to a decline in the US Dollar Index, providing a lift to currencies such as the British Pound and New Zealand Dollar. This same sentiment, however, weighed on energy markets, with West Texas Intermediate crude oil prices hovering near $76.00 per barrel amid prospects of increased global supply from Iran.
Divergent Central Bank Policies Shape Currency Markets
Outside of the US, other major central banks influenced foreign exchange trading, as the Australian Dollar gained ground following a hawkish policy hold by the Reserve Bank of Australia. In China, officials signaled intentions to manage money market volatility and intensify financial regulation, while the People's Bank of China continued its daily currency management. Meanwhile, the Japanese Yen remained weak against the US Dollar despite a recent rate hike from the Bank of Japan.
