Gold Rallies on Broad US Dollar Weakness
Gold prices advanced as a broad-based decline in the US Dollar and falling Treasury yields followed the results of the US midterm elections. The dollar weakened against a basket of major currencies including the Euro, British Pound, Canadian Dollar, and Japanese Yen, providing a tailwind for commodities. The Australian Dollar also gained ground, supported by both the weaker greenback and a report showing its trade surplus widened significantly in September.
Global Central Banks Signal Tighter Policy
Several international central banks indicated a move toward tighter monetary policy, creating a contrast with the weakening US dollar environment. Minutes from the Bank of Japan's September meeting showed members agreed on the suitability of continuing to raise interest rates, which supported the yen. Similarly, the Swiss National Bank stated it would not hesitate to modify policy to combat rising inflationary pressures, while China's central bank set a stronger fixing for the yuan.
Oil Prices Weaken on Geopolitical Developments
West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil prices remained depressed, extending recent losses to near one-month lows. The decline is being attributed to market expectations that the US election outcome may lead to de-escalation and a lower risk of conflict with Iran, easing concerns over potential supply disruptions.
