Weekly Precious Metals Recap: #Gold and #Silver End the Week Near Their Lows, With December Crude at $103 and Midterm Election Uncertainty Adding Pressure
Gold is barely holding above $4,000, while silver has fallen to around $54, as precious metals continue to face selling pressure. December crude oil is trading near $103, Middle East tensions remain unresolved, and the upcoming midterm elections are adding another layer of uncertainty, with expectations growing that Democrats could take control of the House. Meanwhile, all eyes are on the upcoming FOMC meeting and the direction of U.S. interest rates.
Despite the recent correction, there are several longer-term positives worth keeping in mind: India's silver demand: India has relaxed import duties on silver ahead of the wedding season, which should encourage renewed imports and potentially support physical demand. Central bank gold buying: Central banks continue to accumulate gold, providing an important source of long-term demand and support for the gold market. U.S. interest rates: Eventually, U.S. dollar interest rates should move lower. The question is when, possibly within the next 6–12 months, particularly if we begin to see some resolution to the Middle East crisis and inflationary pressures ease.
Gold and silver EFPs: Implied EFPs continue to move lower, potentially creating tighter conditions in the London OTC market. This is an important development to monitor, especially if physical liquidity begins tightening again.
As I have been saying for months, patience remains your best choice in this market. The longer-term fundamentals for precious metals remain in place, in my view, but markets are simply too driven by negative headlines, geopolitical developments, elevated interest rates, and political uncertainty.
We need to get past some major obstacles before the market can regain confidence and establish a more sustainable direction.
Short-term volatility does not necessarily change the long-term fundamentals. Patience and discipline remain key.
