Gold and Silver: I was almost starting to run out of patience...

By Robert Gottlieb · August 6, 2026

It looked like the precious metals rally was beginning to gain real momentum today.

Gold and silver got off to a strong start, and it finally felt like the market was ready to break higher after several weeks of consolidation. Then the headlines changed.

Crude oil reversed sharply, going from down on the day to up approximately 3%, and the precious metals market quickly gave back its gains. Gold is now about $65 off its intraday high, while silver has retreated roughly 70 cents from its high.

This is exactly why I've continued to emphasize patience. Markets driven by geopolitical developments are notoriously headline-dependent. Sharp intraday reversals like today's can be frustrating, but they are also a reminder of how quickly sentiment can change when the market is reacting to news rather than fundamentals.

My view hasn't changed. I still believe the longer-term fundamentals for precious metals remain intact. Central bank buying continues, investors remain under-allocated to the sector, and geopolitical uncertainty has not disappeared. What has changed is the market's day-to-day reaction to every headline.

Rather than trying to predict every move, I continue to believe it's better to let the market reveal its direction. Periods like this require discipline, perspective, and above all, patience.
