#Gold & #Silver — Total Capitulation as Crude and the USD Surge
By Robert Gottlieb · September 28, 2026
Gold and silver are getting hammered today, with crude oil up nearly 3%, gold down $172 (4%) and silver plunging $3.62 (5%), while the U.S. dollar continues to rally. This is exactly why I have been advocating patience for months. While I remain bullish on the longer-term fundamentals for precious metals, I have consistently maintained that patience and avoiding new positions have been the best approach in this highly uncertain environment. We may be talking 6 - 12 months before things are resolved.
The continued escalation of the Iran crisis, with no clear resolution in sight, is pushing crude prices higher and reigniting inflation concerns. A stronger USD, elevated Treasury yields and uncertainty over the path of U.S. interest rates are compounding the pressure on gold and silver. We also have the U.S. midterm elections approaching, with uncertainty surrounding which party will control the House and Senate and what that could mean for future legislation and fiscal policy. The combination of geopolitical uncertainty, inflation concerns, interest rates and political uncertainty continues to create a very difficult short-term trading environment. What concerns me most is the possibility of forced liquidation. When markets experience moves of this magnitude, margin calls, stop-loss selling and reduced dealer risk appetite can accelerate declines. Even fundamentally attractive assets can sell off sharply when investors need liquidity. The key question now is whether we are seeing genuine capitulation or whether there is more selling ahead. I would be watching EFPs, ETF flows, options volatility and physical demand closely for signs of stabilization. My longer-term outlook for precious metals remains positive, but that does not mean we have to catch every falling knife. Patience, capital preservation and discipline remain essential in this market. Educational purposes only. Not investment advice.
